Manchester City have formally rejected Brazilian club Corinthians’ offer of €40 million (£35 million) for Carlos Tévez.
The bid was £15 million below City’s valuation of their captain, who is desperate to leave Eastlands to return to South America with his family.
Before City countenance selling Tévez, they want to satisfy themselves that the financial details of any potential deal are correct and that there is no benefit for the player’s adviser, Kia Joorabchian. He has, however, already made it clear that this is not the case.
Joorabchian confirmed that Corinthians had submitted a formal bid which would have made his client the most expensive player to move to South America.
“It is a big deal and a tough deal, because it is one of a very big nature and it might not be simple,” he said. “Carlos has a lot of respect for City but unfortunately his wife and daughters have not been able to adapt. He decided he would like to move somewhere where his wife and two daughters would move with him, and where they would find it easier to adapt.”
Matters have been complicated by the fact the Brazilian transfer window closes in nine days time. However, the player leaving for South America still seems to be the best solution for all parties, especially as Corinthians, Tévez’s former club, do have the money to attract him.
City want to sign Atlético Madrid’s Sergio Agüero as Tévez’s eventual replacement and are close to a €45 million agreement.
If a deal with Corinthians cannot be struck then Tévez remains determined to leave City and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has suggested he needs to sign a striker.
The 27 year-old would prefer to move to a Spanish-speaking country if he cannot return to South America.
